In this blog, we’ll explore Version Tags in Sigma Computing—what they are, how to create them, and why they’re useful. How version Tags help track changes, maintain version control, and improve collaboration within your Sigma environment.
Whether you’re working on dashboards, datasets, or worksheets, these tags provide a structured way to manage updates and ensure consistency. Let’s dive into the details and see how Version Tags can enhance your workflow in Sigma.
Version Tags in Sigma allow users to create and label specific versions of their workbooks, datasets, or models. It helps track changes, manage versions, and collaborate efficiently.
Here are some examples of labels that we can create.
-
Draft: Representing workbooks that are still undergoing construction.
-
Review: Finalize workbooks that are in line for review from peers or important personnel.
-
Production: Workbooks that are deemed complete and ready for deployment.
-
Archived: Workbooks set aside along with other outdated resources that might be useful in the future.

How to Create Version Tags in Sigma
An administrator can create specific version tags in the Sigma Instance. The Versions tags can be descriptive and include a customizable name and color identification for easier management.Â
We can create Version Tags in Sigma by following the below steps:Â
Click on the Profile on the Top right-hand corner of the home page
Select Administration.
After selecting Administration (only admin users can see this option), we need to select Tags from the left-hand side options.
Inside tag options, click on the Create Tag option on the right-hand side at the top.
Once we click on the Create Tag button, we can customize the tag as below.
Name:
Depending on the stage, we can name the worksheet/dataset as per Convenience, e.g.:-Â
Development: About workbooks currently under development.
Testing: About workbooks currently being tested.
Production: About workbooks that are completed and ready for broadcasting.
Description:
We can add the description to the tag for better user understanding.Â
Color:Â
We can color code the tag per the company standards, e.g., green for Production workbooks/datasets.
Permission:
We can have the below permission for the tags
Public: To use a public tag, the member must have edit permissions for the workbook or data model.Â
Protected: To use a protected tag, the member must be an admin or have edit permissions for the workbook or data model and be listed below. Explicitly listed members will receive requests to use the tag.
Once the admin creates the Version Tags, the users with proper permissions can tag their workbooks/datasets by following the steps below.
Open the workbook, and on the left-hand side at the top, we can see the current tag of the workbook.Â
We can change the tag by clicking the dropdown next to it and selecting the Tag this version option.Â
Here, the user can see all the tags created by admins available to the user to use and can tag them accordingly.
Advantages of Version Tags
Tracking Changes Over TimeÂ
Tagging each version of your workbook allows you to track the progress of your work quite easily. It is possible to observe:Â
Modifications: Changes made in each version can be easily pinpointed.
Improvement: The changes can be assessed to determine the quality and insight potential of the workbook.
Issues: It is possible to determine the newer errors and inconsistencies created through changes.
Facilitating Seamless Collaboration: Everyone becomes far more productive when working with the correct data and analysis. This ensures that:
Communication is much clearer: When applicable, the exact situation-relevant version can be shared, avoiding confusion.
Collaboration is much more effective:Â Harping on issues while sharing the revised versions for reviewing makes the entire discussion more constructive.
Errors are drastically reduced: Ensuring everyone is working with the same data version makes it impossible for conflicting versions to exist concurrently.
