When a global energy and chemicals leader sought to modernize analytics at scale, they encountered a significant challenge: a legacy Synapse environment with Spark/Azure Data Factory that stretched pipeline runtimes and hindered teams that required trusted, timely insights.Â

From there, our engineers executed the migration, moving more than 500 tables and nearly 60 pipelines from Synapse to Snowflake, translating transformation logic to dbt, and implementing rigorous validation and testing to safeguard accuracy and ensure business continuity.Â
Along the way, we documented best practices and provided hands-on enablement, allowing the client’s engineers to confidently build, test, and deploy in the new stack.

With standardized development practices and improved performance on Snowflake and dbt, the client met target dates without disruption and unlocked a platform built for growth. On the strength of these outcomes, they re-engaged phData to expand the program to an additional 600 tables and more than 500 transformation pipelines.

After the engagement, pipeline runtimes were significantly reduced, including this critical data backfill pipeline that was shortened from 14 hours (using the legacy Synapse process) to just under 10 minutes using dbt/Snowflake, utilizing an XSMALL compute cluster size through a careful process redesign & optimization.  Â
Results
phData established a scalable platform on Snowflake while educating the client for self‑sufficiency for ongoing analytics innovation. In the end, the on-time migration of 500+ tables and 60 pipelines was a huge success with zero disruption to critical workflows.
