The Customer's Challenge
The client’s journey began with a pressing need to overcome the limitations imposed by their outdated analytics and data platforms, which touched every aspect of their clinical, commercial, manufacturing, and regulatory activities. Fragmented reporting and manual data integration made obtaining timely business insights a challenge, while scalability issues threatened to slow growth and innovation.
As their appetite for data-driven initiatives increased, entrenched silos and an aging infrastructure began to hold them back, making compliance more burdensome and raising concerns about data quality.

phData partnered with the client to modernize and scale its analytics, data engineering, and operational platforms using a suite of AWS-native and cloud-first technologies. Key elements of the solution included:
- Migrating 153 complex legacy OBIEE reports to interactive Power BI dashboards, leveraging Snowflake as a modern data warehouse on AWS for consolidated, reliable analytics.
- Orchestrating hundreds of data pipelines with self-hosted Astronomer on AWS, using Amazon EKS for scalable, secure container management and AWS Managed Workflows for Apache Airflow (MWAA) to maintain and migrate legacy workflows. This solution spanned manufacturing, commercial, compliance, and operational units.
- Integrating Fivetran and dbt on AWS to automate data ingestion, transformation, and model validation; implementing robust data quality checks and governance to protect sensitive pharmaceutical data and ensure regulatory compliance.
- Establishing a unified support model with 24x7 multi-tiered incident response, proactive monitoring, and rapid fulfillment for data service requests—including knowledge transfer, documentation, and enablement for the client.
- Automating object provisioning, ticket management, and compliance workflows with custom tooling that drastically reduces manual overhead and strengthens security across all business units.
Support services covered pre-migration planning (discovery, architectural design, and backlog generation), the migration and implementation phases (including automation of pipeline deployment and data model extensions), and post-migration managed services (knowledge transfer, incident management, and continuous platform optimization)
Results
The client’s new data ecosystem, powered by AWS and phData engineering, delivered transformative business outcomes:
- Analytics and AI services now reliably support over 2,000 users and process more than 20 million queries per month across seven business units.
- Data pipeline orchestration improved dramatically—with over 1,500 pipeline alerts triaged, 3,500+ service requests fulfilled, and 2,400+ Snowflake roles provisioned annually, all at an average ticket response time of less than two minutes.
- Report consolidation (from 153 legacy reports to streamlined dashboards) reduced duplication and improved business insight, while rigorous governance practices enhanced data integrity and reduced compliance risk.
- Automated provisioning, robust monitoring, and standardized security controls reduced total cost of ownership, enabled faster onboarding of new data products, and allowed the client to expand without proportional increases in operational cost.
